Keir Starmer becomes UK prime minister

Keir Starmer has won a landslide victory at the UK general election ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

The Labour leader becomes the new UK prime minister after he secured the 326 seats required for a majority in the House of Commons.

Keir Starmer delivered his first speech as prime minister – minutes after being appointed by the King.

At a podium in front of cheering crowds of Labour staff and supporters, Sir Keir said: “Thank you.”

“Now our country has voted decisively for change, for national renewal and a return of politics to public service,” he says.

He added that this “wound, this lack of trust can only be healed by actions – not words – I know that”.

Starmer said work to bring change to the country will begin “immediately”.

Starmer replaces Rishi Sunak who was the first British Asian Prime Minister – in charge since 2022.
