Leicester is set to welcome a new addition to its airwaves with the launch of Radio Utsav, a dedicated 24-hour radio station celebrating Gujarati traditions, culture, and history.
Scheduled to debut later this summer, Radio Utsav will broadcast on a small-scale DAB platform, becoming the only station of its kind in the UK.
Radio Utsav promises to offer a diverse array of locally produced programs that blend classic and modern Gujarati music. The station’s content will also feature community news, debates, cultural and educational segments, live events, and interactive phone-ins. While the primary language of broadcast will be Gujarati, listeners can also expect occasional segments in Hindi and English.
This new station aims to provide a comprehensive platform for the Gujarati community in Leicester, enhancing the local media landscape with its unique focus. The launch of Radio Utsav will introduce direct competition to the existing Asian Leicester-based station, Sabras Radio, which has long been a staple for the South Asian community in the area. Additionally, other smaller community stations like EAVA FM, which offer multicultural programming not exclusively South Asian, will now have to share the airwaves with this new dedicated Gujarati broadcaster.
