Disney exploring strategic options for future of Star India

The Walt Disney Company is reportedly mulling plans for the future of its India business.

Disney had acquired Star India from 21st Century Fox in 2019. However, it is now said to be either planning to sell the assets outright or jump into some sort of joint venture (JV), according to The Wall Street Journal.

The report adds that Disney has reached out to banks to discuss its future. A Reuters report seems to corroborate the development.

Star India, which leads the Hindi genre with Star Plus, amongst many other genres, also has a strong leading position in the OTT market with Disney+ Hotstar.

Recently, Disney+ Hotstar has faced increasing competition from Reliance Industries’ streaming platform, JioCinema. Bob Iger is also said to be concerned about the $3 billion spent on rights to broadcast the IPL through to 2027.
